BYOD (bring your own device)

Activating a phone you already own on a carrier you're joining. Most carriers welcome BYOD — usually with a free SIM or eSIM activation.

BYOD (bring your own device) is the act of bringing a phone you already own to a new carrier, rather than buying a new phone with the carrier's service.

Why BYOD?

Carriers (especially MVNOs) usually offer their best plan prices to BYOD customers. You skip the financing cost baked into postpaid plans and get a cleaner monthly bill. If your existing phone works fine, the savings can be $30–60/month per line versus a new-phone postpaid plan.

BYOD eligibility check

Before switching, run your phone's IMEI through the new carrier's "Bring Your Own Phone" or "Check Compatibility" page. They'll tell you whether the phone:

  • Is compatible with their network bands
  • Is currently locked to another carrier (must unlock first)
  • Is on a stolen-device blacklist (will not be activated)

Most modern unlocked phones (iPhone 11+, Galaxy S20+, Pixel 5+) work on essentially every US carrier.

How to activate BYOD

  1. Choose the new carrier and plan.
  2. Get a SIM (free shipped or pickup at a store) or activate an eSIM via the carrier's app.
  3. If porting your number from another carrier, have the account number and PIN from the old carrier ready.
  4. Activation usually takes 5–30 minutes once the SIM is in the phone.
